The Vegetarian Society will soon unveil a new weapon in its battle to convert meat eaters to vegetarianism: the environment.
During the fifteenth National Vegetarian Week, which runs 21st-27th May this year, the Society will publish a booklet arguing the case that vegetarians are less damaging to the environment than their meat-eating peers.
Amongst the charges to be levelled are the proportion of climate change gases emitted by livestock production - a fifth of global emissions, the Society says - plus the indictment that most deforestation is due to land-clearing for livestock production and growing their feed.
To mark the week, free new recipes for local and seasonal meals - that theoretically require less food miles and thus emit less CO2 - will be published on the Vegetarian Society website.
